Charles Renouvier (1815-1903) and Jean-Marie Guyau (1854-1888) were both, each in his own way, knowledgeable commentators of Hugo’s work. Both critical of “art for art’s sake”, they also considered the Hugolian motif of “useful” art, art immanent to life, participating in the ethical and political struggles of its time, while striving to direct it towards or redefine it according to new and wider foundations. This promising endeavour nonetheless struck a certain number of limits.
