Many school systems evaluate, through ministerial examinations, their students’ language mastery at key moments of their schooling. This article aims to describe the tests used at the end of primary school (5th or 6th grade) in six French-speaking countries or provinces (France, Belgium, Switzerland, Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick) in order to show what these tests actually measure. We will describe the establishment of these tests, their objectives, format, topics proposed, evaluation criteria and more specifically the way they assess spelling. In conclusion, we will highlight the vision of language that these tests convey, and the nature of information on students’ writing competence they provide policy makers.
