Reflexivity in film and animal participation - 2022.

93

This article looks at animal participation in interactions with humans through a study of audiovisual practices and the filming of social situations involving humans and animals. Making use of ethnomethodological techniques and conversational analysis, it presents an analysis of videoed interactions during the production of an audiovisual record of a large-scale show (the Fête des Vignerons wine festival in Switzerland). The study focuses, specifically, on the filming of one particular scene from the show: the “Ranz des vaches,” a traditional song celebrating the bond between herders and their animals. In this context, the article explores the notion of reflexivity in film by examining the specific practices through which the intelligibility of the interactions between humans and animals is perceived and documented in video images.
