Based on a critical monetary approach, identifying the relevant dimensions of poverty has been a central concern over the past two decades. The paper first reviews the key arguments in the debate. It then contributes to it by proposing an empirical analysis of social representations of poverty. To study the links between these and conventional indicators of poverty, we propose an application to Madagascar's highlands.
