Financing investment loans is a key element for rural development in countries of the South. However, many obstacles limit the ability of microfinance institutions to deliver mid- and long-term loans. Based on experience in West African countries, this paper develops two promising channels in order to improve the contribution of microfinance: the potential role of financial cooperatives and articulation with public policies.
