Part I of this bibliography was published in issue 11 of Napoleonica. La Revue in 2011 (http://www.cairn.info/revue-napoleonica-la-revue-2011-2-page-32.htm). It lists the texts, whether memoirs dictated to his companions in exile, the reminiscences of the companions themselves, or accounts written by visitors to the island or by faithful servants of the fallen emperor. Part II here lists the historians, the contemplators and critics of Napoleon’s “last phase”. “St Helena” has become an expression in itself, implying not just a geographical spot but also the final years of Napoleon’s extraordinary career, whether in terms of the glimmer of past glory or the solitary demise of an ogre. The events, his actions and even his writings were all dissected in an attempt to capture the spirit of St Helena. This second part lists: historical essays on the exile, both across the whole period and thematically; biographies of the people present on St Helena or during the Retour des Cendres; commentaries on the St Helena accounts, notably on the Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène. The majority of works listed were published in French and English and concern both books and articles. Documents on other media, such as visual and audio, have not been included, nor has unpublished archival material.
