This article looks at the maintenance of order in Paris under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte, then head of the interior army. Faced with the political instability of Year III, the Thermidorian Convention centralized military command in Paris and created the Legion of Police, reforms that were taken up by Bonaparte. Rethinking public order after Vendémiaire 13, the general revitalized the National Guard, completed recruitment for the Legion of Police and reorganized the officers of these two security corps. Bonaparte also systematized the maintenance of law and order, dividing it into daily and emergency services, the latter being essentially the responsibility of the Line Army. Surveillance of theaters and night patrols were also established. Finally, the creation of the surveillance office regulated soldier discipline, while providing Napoleon Bonaparte with a valuable source of intelligence on Parisian society.
