All multilateral negotiations are structured by coalitions, but these are of particular importance to small states, such as small island states. This article focuses on one such coalition, the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), within global climate negotiations. Following the framework of this special issue, the present analysis first shows the need for a collective engagement in the negotiations, given the limited resources of small states. It then turns to the diversity of island delegations, highlighting the important role of non-island support. The analysis further explores AOSIS’s common positions in the negotiations, but also the diversity of interests among AOSIS members, and finally the group’s accomplishments. Even if these accomplishments are sometimes merely symbolic, it is through common efforts via AOSIS that small island states make their voice heard at the global level.
