The purpose of this paper is to unveil the wings of different investigations conducted in prison between 1997 and 2006 and to show how the researcher has to come to terms with his field as he or she can never master it. Focus is put on the principle of the gift and the obligation to give back. This principle lies low in any situation of investigation but prison life ethnography fully highlights it. Because giving, receiving and giving back is at the heart of the relationship between research worker and warder.
