The text of the Autobiography of St. Ignatius of Loyola, situated at the crossroads of the medieval pilgrimage and modernity, comprehends three distinct instances of pilgrimages: the ascetical process, the search for identity, and the mystical quest. An analysis of Ignatius’ use of pilgrimages in the nascent Society of Jesus reveals, however, that they mainly touched upon the dimensions of asceticism and identity, thus obliterating the genuinely mystical summit of Ignatius’ journey, which was ushering into an infinite inner pilgrimage.
