Insults in all Genders: Identity Construction and Socialization of Teens in School - 2014.

This paper draws on aspects of research carried out on socioeducational issues of gender and violence in educational institutions. Semidirective interviews with school directors, in addition to one year of ethnographic observations in five representative schools, allow us to identify the constant irruptions of sexuality, notably in the form of insults, that adults do not understand and students banalize. This adolescent language carries highly marked gender stereotypes. We understand the use of such language and the recourse to gender stereotypes through a double lens: firstly as a function of socialization and integration through group membership and peer norms, and secondly, as the psychological defense mechanism against anxiety and towards identity affirmation.
