Intergroup Dynamics and Social Change Surrounding the Opening of Marriage to Same-Sex Couples in France - 2016.

6

In the French context of the opening of marriage to same-sex couples, this article aims to highlight the general conditions for the emergence and actualization of social change. Going by the theoretical frameworks of social identity and intergroup relations, it suggests that the opening of a state institution to a minority group entails social dynamics and symbolic challenges that might restructure the content and meaning of the social identities involved in the process. Moreover, regarding research on the implications of—and conditions for—the transformation of social norms and representations, we are led to apprehend those social dynamics, symbolic issues, and identity restructuration as significant agents of social change. On these bases and regarding the specificities of the French context, the authors also consider the possible implications of these transformations for social and symbolic fields.
