Render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. Putting the monetary doctrine into perspective - 2022.

This article examines the scene of the “payment of the tax to Caesar” (Mt 22:15-21) through the prism of monetary doctrine, drawing on the commentaries of some Latin Fathers. The theological interpretation of the scene changes radically according to the vision of the nature of money: the denarius that is presented to Jesus can be perceived as a commodity money – it is minted in the image of the emperor – or as a sign money – it is the standard of measurement for the tax. The words of Christ then parallel two payments: that of a debt to Caesar, and that of a debt to God.
