The Ukrainian resistance should be seen in its long-term context, starting with independence in 1991, and confirmed by the events of 2014. The national opinion has consistently tended to be aligned with the EU, and then with NATO, leading the country to seek a complete separation from Russia, and most of all from its Soviet historical heritage. Accelerating processes that had already begun, Ukraine wants to end the war as a true European democracy.
