This article aims to clarify the relationship between ambiance and landscape. It starts from the assumption that landscape as a change of scenery and a view from a distance is opposed to the ambiental dimension, which implies the total absorption of individuals in their surroundings. It then shows how landscape nevertheless contains a form of ambiental participation, based on the Romantic or Chinese landscape, and finally comes to distinguish the immersive and non-aesthetic ambiance of any landscape experience.
