Pius Njawé (1957-2010): A posthumous portrait of a fighting journalist - 2010.

28

Pius Njawé, the editor of the Cameroonian daily Le Messager, died on July 12, 2010 in a car accident in Virginia (United States). He was invited there by Cameroon Diaspora for Change (Camdiac), an organization that brings together political parties and activists determined to build an alternative for the next presidential election, to be held in 2011. Pius Njawé made his name worldwide as a staunch defender of freedom of the press. He was one of the leading figures of the post-Independence French-speaking African journalism that disappeared. He has died at a time when his newspaper is going through one of its most serious crises in the last thirty years, and when the future of the Cameroonian media landscape is subject to many uncertainties. The portrait set out here tells of the destiny of a fighting journalist.
