Has the family cycle really been modified or is it merely a question of nomenclature with marriage being replaced by extra-marital cohabitation and illegitimate children not differing from legitimate ones in any way ?The ‘Family History’ survey conducted by INED in 1985-1986 was intended to provide an accurate picture of the true situation of couples**, irrespective of their legal status. Here Henri Leridon*** and Catherine Villeneuve-Gokalp*** provide the first results which show the necessity of a revision of previous estimates.
