The notion of field allows a more comprehensive view of certain aspects of the analytic situation. Firstly, it is different from other similar notions: atmosphere, setting, relation, analytic third. It is enriched by some of W.R. Bion’s ideas: transformation and evolution in O. In the second part of the paper, the notion of “enlarged field” is introduced which includes the Alpha Function (metabolic capacity and elaboration), as well as the notion of the “narrative function”: turning emotions into narratives. Clinical fragments of Individual and group cases illustrate how this notion operates.
