The outcomes of psychotherapies for parental couples can be assessed based on two main principles: marital adjustment and coparental alliances. This article studies the interactions between couples bent on resolving a coparental problem as a useful additional dimension to the assessment. Results show that marital satisfaction and coparental alliance (N = 34) evolve during therapy along two profiles: 1) couples in distress who improve, and 2) couples who are doing well both before and after therapy. Elements observed concerning agreement, competition, and problem solving are linked to the couples’ evolving profiles. This study shows that observational data complements questionnaire-based assessments in that they are empirically valid as well as significant and useful for the clinician.
