Roughly speaking, we can say that prostitution is an activity that exacts a price for one’s sexuality. This is why prostitution keeps sexuality separate from desire and transforms it in a commercial activity. Which are the consequences of such transformations for individuals? A democratic society has to take a stand on it and try to regulate such an activity? After having shown that prostitution is problematic from an ethical point of view in that it deprives sexuality of substance and meaning, we shall try to highlight the limits and the dangers of both prohibitionist and regulative positions. On the one hand, prohibitionist positions transform prostitutes into criminals. On the other hand, regulative positions not only consider that prostitution is licit, but they also transform it into an ordinary activity.
