Restorative Justice - 2012.

The general dissatisfaction towards the traditional penal justice system which produces a lengthy and costly judicial process and leads to prison overload as well as feelings of deception for the victims has sparked the development in various countries around the world, of an alternative justice labelled reparative or restorative. This “new” conception of justice and of the human consists of two main approaches: victim-aggressor mediation (in presence of both parties) and meetings with the familial group. Initially published as a chapter in Introduction à la psychologie positive (Paris: Dunod), this article describes the different functional modalities of restorative justice as well as its positive consequences for aggressors, victims and society at large. An increasing number of studies indeed survey a very clear decrease in the incidence of repeat offenses and a diminishing of the gravity of the latter due to these types of practices.
