Transcending Resentment. Elias and the Five Paths Towards An Other Sociology - 2014.

The silence of Elias on the Jewish question in the whole of his work, and in particular in The Germans, while his own life was profoundly impacted by anti-Semitism, leads us to suppose that the issue irrigates his thinking on a profound level. This article proposes to interpret this silence as marking a systematic enterprise of transcendence of that which took the form of resentment for many other thinkers who were confronted with similar tensions. Sociology as a means of surmounting resentment, the insistence on interdependency rather than domination, on relations rather than substance, on contexts rather than general entities, and on analytical description rather than value judgment, all appear as ways by which the sociology of Elias performed this purely intellectual process of sublimation, while opening profoundly novel perspectives for sociology.
