The ways of hosting foreigners are examined through interviews, conducted during the first years of this new century, with Russians who were living and working abroad and with foreigners who were living and working in Russia. By following up on how people lived with foreigners, ranging from distant to very intimate relations, this survey sheds light both on the sensitive balance of the asymmetric behaviors expected on each side and on the risks of failings and misunderstandings that can soon turn a guest into an enemy. Tensions were observed between hospitality and other arrangements, ranging from the paying guest to the friend or lover, not to mention relations laden with expectations of reciprocity.
