The unusual character of Rousseau’s theory of the origin of languages lies in its resolutely anti-utilitarian dimension. In fact, far from being the mechanical consequence of a necessity for men to regroup, languages, because they are for Rousseau the expressions of the feelings and passions which arise from a completely different trade between men, provoke a real symbolic break that institutes society on the transcendence of all contingencies. This is how Rousseau does a work of anthropology, identifying in this inaugural obligation to separate from itself, the foundation of language and gift.
