How do novice schoolteachers undergoing vocational retraining start out in the teaching profession? Using professional didactics as a conceptual tool, this work studies the discourse of student civil servants undergoing vocational retraining. The results allow us to identify ambivalence in the influence of their previous professional and personal experience; in other words, to what extent it facilitates (or complicates) the success of this “initial” training. We then discuss the origin of this ambivalence in connection with the construction of the subject’s temporal identity.
