Public secular institutions are a place of commitment for citizens who are also believers. Yet these institutions demand that convictions based on ”comprehensive doctrines“, as John Rawls called them, be set aside. Citizen believers are subjected to institutional normativities that oppose their values and their identity as believers. How do they react to the inevitable axiological clashes? What identity changes or recompositions do such engagements require? What sort of theological accompaniment could be useful in such institutional contexts?
