European research is undergoing radical change. Beyond mutations in models, it has been affected by numerous material changes in recent years. Taking the examples of three countries, the authors describe three “dimensions” in policy change: means agencies, funding tools, and the organisation of research. Among the many points the three cases have in common are the influence of Europeanisation and strong international competition.
