Moral education needs to reflect on the types of relationships that inspire someone to become a responsible person. Young people develop their values in the context of enriching relationships with people they trust. Moreover, as the account of the encounter between David and Nathan shows, ethical intuitions are most often awakened, on the one hand, by emotions of outrage and rebellion, or, on the other hand, by satisfaction and happiness. Current research thus affirms the importance of the concepts of honour and shame for moral education. Finally, the existential engagement of religion is an inexhaustible source of ethical awakening, offering a community, strong relational links, personal engagement, a concern for recognition and empathy, and help forming responsible persons.
