Art, religion, and ethics: three experiences of resonance - 2021.

Aesthetic experience, religious experience, and ethical experience represent three approaches to living a good life. They are sometimes intimately linked, sometimes in conflict, and sometimes contradict one another. The question of how to articulate the relationship between these three experiences runs through the history of ideas, from the definition of the transcendentals (the true, the good, the beautiful) to the stages of existence according to Kierkegaard and can also be found in recent literature. This article seeks to explore this classical problematic with the help of the theory of resonance developed by the sociologist Hartmut Rosa, proposing an alternative view of what is called “spirituality” in other language games. If modern art occupies a place formerly attributed to religion, the importance of aesthetic experience can be explained by its transformative capacity in the subject’s relationship to a world that becomes inaccessible to exploitation and domination.
