Human rights: a wounded memory and a hope for humanity, against all odds - 2022.

What has happened to human rights, such that we are still able to use live ammunition against our children who cry out their desire to live? What has happened to human rights, such that, in many places on our planet, the bodies of others, their desire to live, and their aspiration to grow and to be fulfilled are no longer considered the primary imperative and the foremost commandment that demands respect? How is it that the bare face of the other no longer reminds us of the commandment “thou shalt not kill”, as Emmanuel Levinas once said? Have we reached the absolute nadir of human rights? Or is it still possible to conceive and to carry in ourselves this ’respect’ that we can offer to the other “and which reverberates in our own self-respect”, to cite the beautiful expression of Paul Ricœur?
