Hysteria, a psychoneurosis based on actual neurosis, can be seen, according to Freud and other authors, from the perspective of a continuum between an ongoing process of symbolization and clearer forms of traumatic economies. A female patient suffering from anesthesia followed by burning sensations in her hands and forearms is used to illustrate the symbolization “after the fact” of a form of primary traumatic memory etched in the soma and negativized.
