Gustav Mahler: Jealousy and Rivalries - 2011.

64

The Viennese musician Mahler met Freud on a single occasion in August 1910, following his marital difficulties with Alma and her affair with Gropius. The visit seemed to be crowned with success, but Mahler died a few months later. After Freud, psychoanalysis studied the « Mahler case » many times over, analysing not only his jealousy and his bond with his mother but also the role played in his works by repeated mournings and sibling rivalry. These two aspects of jealousy, and some expressions of their conflicts in Mahler’s music, are indicated here.
