This article explores the contemporary transformations of the modern retailing sector through a study of the trajectory of the Carrefour group during the first decade of the twenty-first century. The perspective adopted is the perspective of financialization. I show how the restructuring of stock ownership has fueled a new profit strategy, which has negatively impacted operations, the wage-labor nexus, and relations with stakeholders. This analysis is based on descriptive financial and operational statistics and semi-structured interviews of top managers, managers, and workers of Carrefour.
