Drawing on clinical material, the author reflects on the relations between autoerotism and the ideal ego, which leads to a discussion on the genesis of autoerotism, the distinction between autoerotism and narcissism and the bodily origins of ideality. It is suggested that the defective primary processes are in danger of becoming an attractor for a pathological and compulsive secondary functioning.
