The author proposes to study the impact of psychic structurings – achieved thanks to “languages” and symbolic codes that are imposed by social factors during psycho-sexual development – on the parallel constitution of sexual identity and of the sexual object. The conclusion is that the object of the drive stems from the split-off part of the identity-based content of the ego during the symbolic passage. It is the auto-erotic representational terrain on which the sphere of identity encounters that of the object.
