The Figured Map, Evidence, and Right: Figured Maps in the Late Middle Ages - 2013.

During the last centuries of the Middle Ages, an entirely new and rather spectacular type of document appeared, namely figured maps. Like views in perspective, maps, or plans, they represented places or territories disputed during a trial and were shown in order to better determine each party's rights. The juridical bases for their use were related to legal theory and practice, which both accepted these figures as valid evidence. However, the nature of these pleadings remains complex as they belong simultaneously to expertise, testimony, and evidence.
