The capacity to use free association complies mainly with the model of neurosis. With borderline or psychotic patients, associativity is subject to impediments, as is illustrated by the clinical case evoked. Deficiencies of language and defensive acting out are opposed to the setting-up of an analytic process. The split-off aspects of the personality are difficult to reach. In these clinical situations the analyst’s countertransference experience is also affected, and particularly his own associativity.
