Starting from a lexical study of the titles of Hellenistic kings qualified as “new gods” (e. g. Neos Dionysus), this dossier focuses on the religious evolution of such practices between the Greek and Roman worlds at the end of the Hellenistic period and during the Roman Empire. It questions the lexical formula itself, the value of the adjective neos / nouus in relation to the divine epiclesis, and the chronology of its use, in the official titles, but also in other texts of various kinds that interpret this assimilation between a figure of power and a god. This introductory chapter sets out the issues at stake in the dossier, which includes four articles highlighting a particular aspect of the topic.
