Cities and ruins in the Satyrica, from Petronius to Fellini - 2020.

Opposed to the imaginative world of the Epic, Fellini Satyricon (1969) displays the Italian director’s very personal conception of Ancient Rome, which he considered definitively to be a ruin of the past. This film reveals various kinds of settings expressing this idea, on different scales, including the urban scenery. This paper deals with these constructions and deconstructions, with a specific focus on the ruins that might have inspired Fellini: the remains brought to light in the 1960s, as well as the novel of Petronius, the Satiricon: it was the starting point of his work, but also a ruined work that sets out a view of a ruined urban society.
