The civil wars that took place in the Congo (1960–1965) and in Biafra (1967–1970) had a lasting impact on shaping the relationship between the West and independent sub-Saharan Africa. Based on a comparative approach, this article analyzes how the international community, non-governmental actors, and Western public opinion reacted to these conflicts and to the humanitarian problems they generated. It thus underlines the changes in the responses to these situations and in how they were represented. In so doing, the article retraces how humanitarianism became a major component of postcolonial international relations, especially regarding the African continent.
