Teaching International Relations in France: The Vagaries of a “Crossroads Discipline” - 2002.

Although the field of International Relations is considered to be a crossroad area of study within political science, it remains marginalized in France. This is mainly due to the organization of higher education in France and to the predominance of research and Anglo-Saxon reviews. Since the sixties and seventies, its teaching remains marked with French academic contributions such as Pierre Renouvin, Jean-Baptiste Duroselle, Marcel Merle and Raymond Aron. Although several initiatives in the field during the 1980’s fostered hope for the rise of the academic discipline, it remains handicapped by the lack of coherent degree course and its exclusion from the political and administrative decision process. Thus, the teaching of International Relations will flourish only by taking advantage of the diversity offered by this interdisciplinary field.
