The Russian “Linguistic Alterity” Faced with Translation

The Russian “Linguistic Alterity” Faced with Translation - 2016.

45

French translations of Russian texts in the nineteenth century are influenced by a collective fantasy regarding the language, that is, the idea that alterity prevails in a foreign language, which creates an identity, and conditions differences in aesthetic creation. As far as French and Russian languages are concerned, the confrontation of their respective “spirit” is striking: the alleged clarity and universality of the French language is opposed to the idea that the “Russian soul” is imbued with obscurity. The relationship between translation and these representations of the foreign language will lead us to explore the possibility of a Russian exception in the nineteenth century.
