A contemporary novel by the Sino-Malay writer Chang Kuei-hsing, Qun xiang, builds its narrative around a journey upstream to the heart of the jungle, reminiscent of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. The present article shall explore the meaning of such an intertextual reference by questioning the vision sought through this narrative structure. Firstly, following the work of Edward Said, we shall approach the question from a postcolonial perspective. We shall then turn to another kind of vision which indicates both the limit and the beyond of language, and through which Qun xiang attempts to give shape to Conradian horror.
