From Einfühlung to sympathy: Lipps and Scheler

This contribution provides an analysis of the reception of the Lippsian theory of Einfühlung in Scheler. While Lipps developed a form of psychology, Scheler belongs to a generation that wanted to re-establish philosophy and break with psychologism and Neo-Kantianism. His criticism of the Lippsian Einfühlung cannot be separated from his realist theory of knowledge, which refuses to consider the subject as a principle that builds reality. Furthermore, the Schelerian conception of sympathy is marked by the philosophy of life, especially in the second version of his book on sympathy (Wesen und Formen der Sympathie, 1923).
