Rousseau’s claim in the Confessions, that he aims at "an undertaking which has no precedent" is unconvincing, since he echoes Augustine’s own Confessions which narrate the first encounters with Evil. Rousseau argues that these encounters should free it from guilt, and this at the cost of the impossible and constantly reiterated task of being, in the absence of God, both the moment of judgment and the one who is judged.
