The acceptance of the analysand’s body in the context of the psychoanalytic process can broaden and deepen the experience. This seems essential in the case where language has never been established, whether it is in primitive areas of experience or in periods of trauma. Paying attention to the body requires the psychoanalyst to address unclear or even problematic parts of his own psyche, in which thought and language do not play a role. This may pose a challenge to the counter-transference, leading to potential slip-ups such as too much talk, untimely interpretation, too little thought, or inopportune action.
