The example of couple’s therapy given here demonstrates an approach to the violence brought to and reported in the session by the couple. The couple’s-therapy setting, to which suffering and even violence may be brought, allows the therapist to see how the couple’s bond may yield a shared economy, precious though costly in the unconscious alliance that organizes the bond. Patient development, which gives actions and certain nonverbal expressions the value of the early stages of symbolization, enables access to a narrative connecting the loose threads of the bond in a different way.
