This work analyzes the location patterns of logistical activities in French urban areas between 1985 and 2009, using data from building permits. It provides new empirical evidence for the debate on the suburbanization of logistics through an analysis of the evolution of its spatial patterns. This study shows that suburbanization takes place not only in the largest metropolitan areas (where city centers are the most congested) but also in medium-sized and small urban areas. Although it affects most urban areas, the suburbanization of logistics took different forms during the different periods under study. In the first period, logistical activities spread over a large number of suburban locations. In the second period, logistics tended to concentrate in a few suburban locations. These results are consistent with the hypothesis offered in recent academic works about the importance of agglomeration economies in the field of logistics.
