Onshore wind power development in Belgium has provoked considerable opposition at the local level. To cope with this issue, wind power cooperatives seem to present important assets. This article explores the reasons why these organizations are likely to enhance the social acceptability of this technology. Then it compares these normative assumptions with empirical data. The results of this analysis confirm the positive effect of cooperative ownership on the social acceptability of onshore wind turbines. Codes JEL : L31, P13, Q42
