In economic literature, especially the economy of development, the typology of countries evolves. In the 1980s, the qualifier of “emergent country” appeared. In this article, we seek to know if Turkey meets the criteria of the emergent countries or if it shows the characteristics of a developing country. Since the major crisis of 2001, the return of growth and the balance of the principal macroeconomic indicators as well as liberal reforms driven by the IMF suggest new prospects. Will they be at the service of human development and wellbeing?
